More Than 3,360 Cancer Patients Supported in 2022

Because of your support and generosity to Gala in 2022, we played a supporting role in the stories of over 3,300 cancer patients in the Dayton region, including:

  • 165 patients at the Dayton VA Hospital, providing them transportation to and from treatment for the length of their treatment. Some could not have followed through on getting well otherwise.

  • 1,436 patients at Kettering Health Network who received more accurate diagnoses and treatment with help from the Cyclotron provided in part by Gala, one of only 150 in the world.

  • 1,050 patients who took advantage of lung cancer screenings at Mercy Health-Springfield as part of Gala's lung cancer initiative for Clark and Champaign counties.

  • 114 patients who received direct aid through our Patient Support program.

  • 151 patients, who received rides to and from treatment in the Gala of Hope-provided vehicle to Pink Ribbon Girls.

  • 35 children at Dayton Children’s Hospital who were served by the Brain Tumor/Brain Cancer program, with additional samples now available through the Living Biobank research program, including that of Kayleigh Trusters:

“Patrick (Kayleigh’s dad) and I didn’t even hesitate when they asked if we wanted to do this,” Mallory, Kayleigh’s mom, said. “It seemed to only be helpful, whether for Kayleigh or another child. In the moment, we felt so helpless and out of control. This was something we could do that brought a little bit of light to a moment of darkness.”

During surgery, the neurosurgeons removed Kayleigh’s tumor completely, and sent a piece of the tumor to be studied. Then, Kayleigh was admitted to the PICU and the Trusters met Dr. Lionel Chow.

It can take time to figure out the right combination of medicines to help make patients feel more comfortable. So, the treatments were pretty difficult at first but got much better as the team found the right “recipe” for Kayleigh. The whole care team at Dayton Children’s quickly started to feel like part of the Trusters’ family.

Today, Kayleigh is a survivor in part because of your gifts.
