Kettering Health - Transforming Lung-Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment

May 21, 2025

Each year, Kettering Health serves nearly half a million patients across 14 counties. For over 25 years, lung cancer has been the second most prolific cancer treated by the Hospital system and more of Kettering Health’s lung cancer patients die in a given year, than the other top three cancers combined.

With support from Gala of Hope Foundation, Kettering Health is enhancing early detection and treatment through two critical investments:

  1. Riverain ClearReadCT
This FDA-cleared software analyzes every chest CT for hidden nodules, boosting radiologist efficiency and uncovering abnormalities that might otherwise be missed.

  2. Ion Endoscopic Biopsy System
The Ion System navigates to hard-to-reach nodules and can biopsy - and if appropriate -remove them in one session, cutting multiple visits down to a single, streamlined procedure which is especially critical in cases of cancer where time is of the essence.

By combining advanced imaging with same-day diagnostic and therapeutic capability, Kettering Health is shortening the path from detection to treatment. Lung cancer detected dearly is more than 10 times more curable, and early lung-cancer diagnosis improves five-year survival rates from just 7% to 55%. These innovations ensure more patients receive life-saving care sooner - right here in the Dayton region.
