Dayton Children’s Hospital Local Discovery, Global Impact
May 21, 2025

Gliomas are among the most aggressive and devastating brain tumors, with a five-year survival rate of just 10%. But right here in Dayton, a research initiative is underway that could help change that statistic - offering new hope to children and adults worldwide.
With support from the Gala of Hope Foundation, Dayton Children’s Hospital has expanded its Living Biobank - a state-of-the-art facility that preserves tumor samples and creates experimental models that are shared with cancer researchers around the globe. This resource enables scientists to study how tumors behave over time, including how and when they grow, shrink, or return. It’s knowledge that could fundamentally change how doctors monitor and treat gliomas, reducing unnecessary surgeries and increasing the chances of selecting effective therapies from the start.
This research is part of a groundbreaking collaboration between Dayton Children’s and Kettering Health. It builds directly on earlier Gala of Hope investments to establish the Living Biobank and demonstrates how local institutions are helping to reshape the future of cancer care - not just for patients in our region, but for families everywhere.
